2019 Playathon Acknowledgement

The 2019 Playathon was held on Saturday, February 9 at the Clairemont Lutheran Church. Students, teachers, families and friends enjoyed an afternoon filled with beautiful solo piano music, violin concerto and piano duets in the fundraising concert for the Goodlin Foundation music scholarships. Among the 25 performers were former Goodlin Competition participants, Goodlin winners, and three of the Kids Into Music (KIM) scholarship recipients.

This year’s Playathon has raised $915, and we would like to thank the following individuals for their generous support:

Tonya Alba, Yiliang Bao, Amra Demirovic, Nathalie Gholmieh, Jim Guerin, Kim Harper, Sophie Hsieh, Hanan Jammal, Chun-ta Lai, Galina Laur, Yuko Maruyama, Tiberiu Negulescu, Kiamran Radjabli, Pedro Salazar, Lea Schmidt-Rogers, Galina Talis, Lielei Wahlmann, Chen Wang, Xing Wang, Quangming Xiao, Yaping Xu, Di Yu, Shandra Zawacki and Liang Zhao

Thank you for making this another successful event. Please join us again next year!

2018 Playathon Report

Playathon, a fundraiser for the Goodlin Foundation music scholarships, was held Saturday, February 17, 2018, with recitals at 2, 3, and 4 pm. The performances were all outstanding and included piano, organ, voice, percussion, guitar, and violin.

Each of the four 2018 Kids Into Music (KIM) scholarship recipients performed. I was able to speak with three of them after their respective recitals, and was very impressed with the poise, maturity, and dedication to their studies and to the study of music that they each expressed. To give a glimpse into the life of one of the KIM students, Jonn Carlo Segovia Menchaca, a violinist, is 13 years old and in the 8th grade at Lewis Middle School. He has studied violin for 4 years and plays in the orchestra at Lewis Middle School. He plans to both continue violin performance in ensembles and orchestras as an adult and to teach, since, as he put it, he likes helping others and to teach others the things he has been taught will be a wonderful profession.

Another of the KIM Scholarship recipients who performed in the Playathon was Fernanda Salazar. Fernanda is 11 years old and is in the 6th grade at The Preuss School, a part of the UCSD system. She took part in a group piano lesson for a time and then said to her teacher that she wanted to have more challenge in her music studies. It was at that time that her teacher applied to put her in the KIM program. When asked if there was anything she credits for her musical advancement which she would like to share with other students, she said that she plays piano every day.

A third student that I was able to speak with was Aryana Pizarro, age 11 and in the 6th grade at the School for Creative, Performing and Media Arts. Most of our San Diego Branch MTAC teachers will be familiar with Aryana’s last name because Aryana’s two brothers, known as The Pizarro Brothers, held the KIM scholarship for a couple of years and played for the branch general meetings at least once a year. In addition to her piano studies and performances, Aryana sings with her brothers. Her goal in life is to continue always in music and to become a Pulmonologist. She has asthma and wants to be able to help children who also have it.

These were inspiring students to listen to and to talk with and we look forward to hearing more from them in the future.

Many thanks to Lea Schmidt-Rogers, Goodlin Scholarship Chair and to Yuko Maruyama, the Kids Into Music Scholarship Chair for their excellence in organizing the Playathon. This was an exceptional event.
